Volunteers originally had a form of Rigby rifling, later changed to Henry (denoted by a H prefix to the serial number). Pitch should be 1 in 78 to match originals, but some were made with 1 in 48 pitch. If you have Pattern 1853 Enfield, if possible please check the rifling pitch and let me know - a tight fitting patch on a cleaning rod should give a good enough measure. This code is invaluable in building an understanding of the production time line. If possible please include the date proof code from the underside of the barrel two letters and a number either between crossed swords or within a circle after the proof load information. The top of the breech block is marked '5335'. The top of the barrel has a scripted 'B', the top of the receiver is marked 'BURNSIDE PATENT / MODEL OF 1864' and the serial number.

Markings: The lock plate is marked BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. I have a database of over 600 Parker-Hale rifles. By the serial number and according to Springfield Research Service, this particular carbine falls within the range of carbines issued to both the Loudon County Rangers and the 2nd Texas Cavalry, both UNION regiments raised after early 1863.
